Sources to Aid us in French Film of the 1920’s

1:

Liebman, Stuart. French Film Theory. Quarterly Review of Film Studies. Issue 1. Informa UK Limited. 1983. 1-23.

This is an in depth article which discusses the style and form of French films in the years 1910 to 1921. French cinema went under a movement towards viewing film as an art, known as Impressionism. Though its downfall was inevitable, Impressionism is plentiful in its information. Stuart Liebman goes into detail about this period in his article, drawing on primary sources of the time to give the reader an understanding of the French history of the movement. He also goes on to discuss ‘Photogénie’ by Louis Delluc as well as other texts written in this period. Although he does not discuss the films we have viewed as a group in our screenings, he does make interesting points on Impressionism and it is altogether an intellectual piece of writing on the subject.

This journal article allows a more detailed study on one of our screenings for the week, Dreyer’s ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’. It argues that this film explores the distinction between symbolism and brutal expressionism, it compares this work to the films and writings of others in this period such as Artaud. Furthermore it provides an overall interpretation of the film which would give interesting background and further knowledge to someone studying it.

  1. This is impressive work that does pretty much all of what was asked for in this week’s task. You clearly state what type of sources your chosen texts are and also go into some detail in outlining their respective aims and central arguments. I especially like how you relate said arguments to this week’s films, even by omission in the case of Liebman’s article.

A small thing: I know it may not look too flashy, but adding a screenshot or photo of the title page of the articles would help illustrate things further.

Citations are mostly good, but need a little tweaking. So:

Murray, Ros. ‘The Epidermis of Reality’: Artaud, the Material Body and Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc. Film Philosophy. Modern Languages Association. 2013. 445-461.

    should be:

Murray, Ros. “‘The Epidermis of Reality’: Artaud, the Material Body and Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc.” Film Philosophy, 17.1, 2013: 445-461.
