The Summit on Environmental Intelligence is kindly sponsored by The Alan Turing Institute, and is a partnership between three of Exeter’s interdisciplinary institutes: the Environment and Sustainability Institute, the Global Systems Institute, and the Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

The Alan Turing Institute is the national institute for data science and artificial intelligence

The Institute is named in honour of Alan Turing, whose pioneering work in theoretical and applied mathematics, engineering and computing is considered to have laid the foundations for modern-day data science and artificial intelligence. The Institute’s goals are to undertake world-class research in data science and artificial intelligence, apply its research to real-world problems, drive economic impact and societal good, lead the training of a new generation of scientists, and shape the public conversation around data and algorithms.

The University of Exeter’s Environment and Sustainability Institute (ESI) is an interdisciplinary centre leading cutting-edge research into solutions to problems of environmental change. Based on the University’s Penryn Campus, in Cornwall, our world class research and education is enhancing people’s lives by improving their relationships with the environment. ESI provides insight and solutions, at local to global scales, to meet the challenges of securing a sustainable future in an era of unprecedented environmental and societal change.

The Global Systems Institute is applying Earth system science to generating networked solutions. Our aim is to work with others to secure a flourishing future for humanity as an integral part of a life-sustaining Earth system. We are uniting a trans-disciplinary group of researchers, educators and partners to look beyond single ‘environmental’ issues to a truly systemic view of coupled global changes in the human social and economic sphere and the biosphere. This will require advancing the state of the art in modelling the Earth system and its sub-systems, including social, economic and engineered (social-ecological) systems.

The University of Exeter Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (IDSAI) provides a hub for data-intensive science and artificial intelligence (AI) activity within the University and the wider region.

Our vision is to develop an innovative approach to the use of data in modern society, covering the entire spectrum from collection through interrogation and analysis, to interpretation, visualisation and communication. By developing and applying cutting edge data analytical methodologies we aim to provide the means to allow data to be fully utilised in addressing some of today’s most important societal challenges.  We also aim to contribute to development of a philosophical framework surrounding data, governance, ethics and social implications of data science, particularly the management, sharing and use of environmental, biomedical and biological data.  We are a truly interdisciplinary research institute with data scientists, mathematicians, and computer specialists across many of our Colleges, Research Institutes, and Departments.
