Who is the researcher?

Jo Hynes, PhD Researcher at the University of Exeter

I am an ESRC funded PhD candidate at the University of Exeter, exploring the legal geographies of immigration law. Using ethnographies of tribunal hearings and interviews with their key actors, I examine the impact of space and technology on access to justice in immigration bail hearings.

I am part of the ASYFAIR network, which explores the extent to which fair and consistent asylum appeal adjudication occurs across EU member states.

I am also a Research Fellow in Online Courts at Public Law Project, where my work focusses on online courts and tribunals, digital justice and related access to justice issues.

PhD working title: Legal Geographies of Immigration Law: Space, Technology & Access to Justice.

Broad research specialisms

My work is situated in the fields of legal geography and socio-legal studies. In particular, I am interested in legal and geographical imaginations of space, access to justice and courtwatching methodologies.
