What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

For the majority of my internship, I worked on preparations for the various careers fairs run by the team. This involved lots of administration tasks and paying attention to detail was paramount. I also worked at the fairs themselves, making sure they went smoothly and that nothing was overlooked. Alongside my work on the fairs, I also worked with the internships team, uploading vacancies and dealing with financials. Here, I had to prepare invoices and update spreadsheets with care to make sure employees were paid the correct amounts.

Towards the end of my internship, when the fairs were over, I began a project called the Internships Index. During this project I aggregated over 140 case studies from students who took part in University managed paid internships and uploaded them all onto a website for students and graduates.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I am very proud of the Internship Index project I worked on. I took it on from another member of the team who left very early on in its conception. Therefore, I was able to make it my own and ultimately decide on its direction. While I will not be here for its official launch in September, I have prepared much of the launch plan and marketing actions and will be pleased to see it being used!

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

My work on the fairs allowed others on the team liaise with employers and focus on generating revenue for the team. Event organisations requires a lot of admin tasks that are time consuming but need doing. I was able to fulfil this role.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

Working on the financial side of things was a bit tricky at first, as I had not worked on balance spreadsheets before but the more I did them the easier it became!

“It was great having Sophia on the team, she was a real asset and was extremely flexible in terms of taking on dfifferent projects and working extra hours, when needed. She was efficient, reliable and hardworking and provided great support in enabling us to run our fairs and events smoothly.” – Employment Services Operations Officer

Universtiy of Exeter - Penyrn Campus Career Zone, SCP, SBP, GBP, A2I

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

I created weekly attendance and feedback reports, and sent weekly feedback requests to students who had attended events run by the Careers Consultants. I was responsible for managing the list of events being run by the Careers Consultants each term, scheduling the sessions, booking rooms and uploading the events to Career Hub. I updated webpages managed by the Career Consultants providing information on graduate destinations and other useful resources for students. I also undertook a marketing role, create a variety of materials including webpage banners, slides for the digital screens around campus and leaflets which are now available from the Career Zone front desk and are being distributed in the accommodation welcome packs in Penryn.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I was proud to win a Highly Commended award at the Student Employee of the Year Awards in the ‘Above and Beyond’ category. I improved my IT skills, both regarding spreadsheets and creating marketing materials, as well as boosting my confidence in the workplace.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I removed the day-to-day administrative burden on the team by carrying out a variety of tasks which they would have otherwise had to do, including analysing attendance and feedback data and managing webpages and events.

Intern – EZ Education

University of Exeter Internships, UoE Internships, UoE Case Studies, University of Exeter Internship Case Studies, A2I

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

While my main responsibility was customer service, I also did a variety of other tasks including the creation of instructional videos, emailing and keeping records of schools using our app, doing simple coding and proofreading of questions on the app, fixing bugs and question errors, recording audio for some of the games, and designing strategies for promotional campaigns.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

My biggest achievement was contributing to the testing and release of a KS1 maths app which included recording some of the audio.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I was able to deal with the customer service almost exclusively so the other members in our small team could focus on their roles. My filmmaking and editing knowledge was also very helpful to the team.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

There were some tricky moments with customers where I didn’t know how to resolve certain technical issues, but the team was always very supportive and the CEOs were always close by and willing to help.

Student Information Desk Advisor – University of Exeter

Student Information Desk, SID, University of Exeter SID, SCP, SBP, GBP

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

Working on the SID desk, I delivered exceptional customer service to students and staff. This involved listening, and offering advice on issues concerning finance, accommodation, IT and many other areas. I needed to communicate effectively, as well as liaise with members of staff from other teams in the University in order to resolve student and staff enquiries. I was required to treat each enquiry in a professional and confidential manner while working in a fast-paced, vibrant environment.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

Being able to communicate effectively with members of the team and learning new skills and information each day. Also, earning the respect and trust of my colleagues to be able to deliver a high standard of work.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I completed an office renovation project over the course of 6 weeks, making our back office more accessible and easier to use. I also networked with a variety of teams at the University to set out a clear plan for the project. Additionally, I took on further responsibilities such as an IT report project and leading the team for a day.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

There were many IT enquiries of which I had little knowledge about. I would communicate with members of my own team or specialist IT teams within the University to find out more information, or look for advice.

I also had to deal with difficult callers or people at the SID Desk. In time, I watched how other people in the team would deal with them and used their techniques for the next time I received any difficult phone calls or desk enquiries.

To research and develop different verticals for the company to deploy its technology into. To come up with solutions to non-technical problems incurred by the company.

The internship was a fantastic opportunity to develop my skills in a company and helped me clarify the transitional steps between higher education and a career.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I felt my time at the company was of mutual benefit to both employer and intern. I enjoyed the challenges I was set and felt I carried them out to the best of my ability.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

I am very grateful for the experience I gained from the internship but in hindsight I would have developed my IT skills more before the internship started.

Employability and Alumni Assistant – HUMS, University of Exeter

UoE Internships, SCP, SBP, GBP, A2I

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

My role was to assist in the delivery of the employability activity in Humanities, through maintaining the website, events, and communications. I also had responsibility for alumni relations in the college, covering a 12 month maternity leave. This included organising networking events and marketing materials for Humanities alumni.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I was given lots of responsibility from day one, and trusted with important projects. This was nerve-racking at first but ultimately it was amazing for my personal development. I felt that my confidence to make decisions, make my voice heard and effect change grew hugely in the first 6 months. 6 months into my GBP role, I was seconded to cover my line manager’s position of Employability Officer for 9 months, giving me more responsibility and control over what was delivered in the College. This was a fantastic opportunity and put me in an excellent position to apply for future roles at the University at a similar level.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I was able to have ownership for our It’s Never Too Late project, a careers campaign aimed at final years to engage them with employability support. This lightened the workload for other colleagues, but also I was able to grow the campaign and ensure that we were effectively engaging final years.

“My Alumni & Employability Assistant provided vital support to events, newsletters & alumni engagement” – Employability and Outreach Manager.

Graduate SUDS Officer – Devon County Council

UoE Internships, University of Exeter Internships, SCP, SBP, GBP, A2I

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

I supported the work of one of Devon County Council’s Flood and Coastal Risk Engineers by providing bespoke surface water drainage advice, in respect of major planning applications, to eleven Planning Authorities in Devon. I fulfilled this statutory duty by critically reviewing the technical aspects of Flood Risk Assessments and engineering drawings, using my knowledge of environmental science, engineering and mathematics, supported by specialist computer software. Whilst preparing this advice, I was responsible for liaising with the Flood and Coastal Risk Officers within the Team, alongside staff from other Risk Management Authorities, to identify any local flood risk issues which could impact a development.

Providing this advice often involved attending site and office meetings, at which, if I was the principal officer, I was responsible for ensuring that a technically viable and sustainable surface water drainage management plan was negotiated and secured, even where significant environmental or financial constraints to development existed.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

Whilst providing bespoke advice to Local Planning Authorities, I was able to deploy much of my knowledge gained throughout my degree, ultimately ensuring that all new major developments throughout Devon employed sustainable measures to manage surface water flood risk.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I was able to provide support to one of the Flood and Coastal Risk Management Team’s new statutory duties, ensuring that the surface water drainage aspects of all new major developments across Devon were scrutinised in detail.

Mr. Christopher James Perrott

Project Leader – BizDef Ltd

Cornwall, UoE Internships, University of Exeter Internships, SCP, SBP, GBP, A2I

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

My role was to carry out background research needed to support an application for Government funding into a new project.

BizDef is a South East Cornwall based research and development consultancy specialising in new forms of energy. A small privately funded business, it aimed to grow and expand its staff base. As part of its business growth strategy, I was taken on to carry out market research, and review literature into renewable energy, supply markets and the economics of climate change. The results of the research formed part of a Proof of Concept report which was used to apply for a vital research and development grant application for a new product.

Eco-toxicology Development Programme – AstraZeneca

UoE Internships, University of Exeter Internships, SCP, SBP, GBP, A2I

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

My main role was to create and develop a Microsoft Excel database of historical control data to assist in the interpretation of eco-toxicology studies undertaken as part of the environmental risk assessment of new pharmaceutical products. I compiled hundreds of individual datasets from studies investigating the effects of pharmaceuticals and other chemicals on aquatic flora, fauna, fish and algae. The aim was to identify anomalies, assess overall variability and so determine warning and action limits for the variability within an individual experiment.

“Having Chris work on the project enabled the data to be collected to be collated in an effective way over a short period of time. We lacked the time and available resources to life the project off the ground and Chris has given complete commitment and focus to the research, as well as a keen eye for detail; which is exactly what we wanted” – Statistician, AstraZeneca

Transition Project Manager – NHS Devon

NHS Internship, SCP, SBP, A2I , GBP

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

As a Transition Project Manager I assisted in the organisation of the transition and closedown of the old Primary Care Trusts, which were replaced by new Clinical Commissioning Groups and other organisations.. The objectives were to close down the PCTs and transfer all staff, equipment, and IT systems to the new CCGs. A lot of communication, organisation and project management skills were needed to manage the 21 different work streams and teams involved.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

My role as a Transition Project Manager has allowed me to significantly develop my skills in communication, organisation and Microsoft Office. I now have experience in administration and project management as well as an insight into what it is like to work in healthcare in the public sector. In addition, I undertook a training course from which I obtained the Association of Project Management’s Introductory Certificate in Project Management. This internship has been vital in helping me to secure my new, permanent role as an Incidents Administrator for South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

Due to the reorganisation of commissioning in the NHS, which led to the closedown of Primary Care Trusts with their assets and liabilities needing to be transferred to new organisations, I was needed to facilitate the transition.
