Summer Intern – Green Evolution Capital LLP

Universtiy of Exeter Internships, UoE Internships, SCP, SBP, GBP, A2I

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

During the internship, I participated in all aspects of the company’s activities, including meetings with lawyers, fund administrators, accountants, etc. My main task was to compile a comprehensive study on the 15 countries including the political, macroeconomic data, a review of the regulatory regime, renewables landscape, etc.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

The work was challenging and interesting and I am very proud of the resulting study that will be genuinely useful to the firm and published in the University library as a reference tool for the dissertations of fellow students! Working closely alongside the two partners of the firm developed a keen sense of professionalism and inspired a range of possible routes and opportunities for career development after university. Getting involved in the surrounding company activities such as contributing to the investor presentation and informing the fund’s senior advisor on key policy mechanisms broadened the experience, skills and networking opportunities that I gained from the internship.

“Matt did an excellent job with the study and was very helpful in many of the meetings he attended with his knowledge of the renewables sector and the UK regulations. The 300+ page study that he completed continues to be an important reference point and marketing tool for the company” – Line Manager

Intern – Elm Financial Management

SCP, SBP, GBP, A2I

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

During my internship I was able to conduct extensive client portfolio research. This meant that I had to look into the areas in which the fund was invested along with the different regions they were located in. I also was able to sit in on client/advisor meetings as well as helping to ensure that after the meeting the paperwork associated with each individual client was dealt with correctly. This included scanning client documents and sorting them into their appropriate files as well as filling out compliance correctly to ensure that progress was always made.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I would say that my biggest achievement was the amount of applicable industry knowledge that I was able to gain. Being able to see how a financial advisory firm operated in practice enabled me to understand the level of knowledge and attention to detail that is required in order to keep clients satisfied.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I hope that during my time there I was able to help my superiors by lightening their workload in terms of the research I conducted. I also helped them with archiving and compliance completion.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

There was a lot of information which I needed to learn but I saw this rather more as an opportunity. The amount of information which I had to take on and incorporate showed me the level of attention to detail that is required in order to be successful in this industry.

Consultant Relations Intern – BlackRock

London Internship, A2I, Access to Internships, Universtiy of Exeter

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

Being placed in the Consultant Relations team, my main role as an intern was to help complete new business proposals (RFP’s) and due diligence for a range of institutional investors across Europe. These mandates were typically for products on the Fixed Income range of funds and involved liaising with product specialists in order to stick to deadlines. I was also given the chance to shadow meetings with investment consultants to observe the investment trends across various asset classes. I was also responsible for an additional project that involved streamlining existing consultant account plans for the team.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

My biggest achievement was learning technical knowledge with respect to asset management and the various trends within the industry. This was done through numerous formal learning sessions as well as on-the-job learning where I picked up what acronyms meant.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

Given that summer was a time for holidays for existing employees, the internship was a benefit to the employer as I was able to take on the workload of absent employee’s. I was also able to present my additional project to senior members of staff which highlighted changes that needed to be made in the investment consultant account plans.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

There was a charity project which all interns took part in and that presented the challenge of coordinating a large group of people with various commitments. Instead we divided ourselves into smaller sub-teams in order to be able to meet more frequently and ultimately raise more for charity.
