Feedback:

We recruited a Data Analyst Support Intern through the Student Business Partnership with the University of Exeter. They helped with the development of a very promising ML algorithm to classify finance data for further analytics. It all went according to plan, there were no issues at all, and it was produced for a very high standard.

We were very impressed with the calibre of the student. We offered our intern an extension which she accepted, and we look forward to continuing working with her.

Our experience was very positive. Our intern was extremely intelligent, diligent, co-operative and very willing to get involved. It was a very positive experience and one that I hope may be repeated.

Feedback:

We recruited an intern to work as a Content Creator for us through the Internship Scheme with the University of Exeter.

Our intern was involved on client projects which received extremely positive feedback and led to repeat business which was fantastic.

The student was very well prepared for the workplace and was an extremely welcome addition to the content creation team. She provided great value on both a strategic and operational level for the company and our clients. Her ability to work independently and learn quickly on the job was instrumental in helping us reach our targets and refine our social media strategy.

I recommend her and the A2I scheme 120% to other employers in the digital marketing industry. The whole experience was very positive and our intern was very beneficial to us as a company and as a team.

Quote from Intern:

“I brainstormed and planned campaigns with team members as well as found a good software to use to implement this, which was then adopted by the rest of the team.”

Feedback:

We hired a Business Council Membership and Marketing Assistant through the University of Exeter Internship Scheme. The intern was prepared for the workplace and worked extremely well. He made an excellent contribution to SBJBC’s work and events, including leading on development of a new website.

The intern quickly made an impression and became a valuable member of our small team, leading on a number of events as well as preparation also. He demonstrated flexibility through remote working, working when necessary.

The Exeter internships at SBJBC have offered students the opportunity to help manage high profile events and important business relationships.  We were so impressed by the calibre of the student that we extended his role and offered him a full-time role for another six months to take forward a number of new projects. It’s pleasing to know that many interns have used the experience to move onto relevant careers in public and government affairs and communications.

This is the sixth time we have used the University’s Internship scheme, and as before it was a very positive experience. We received a good service from the Internships Team and would definitely recommend the Internships Scheme to other employers

Administration Intern – Royal Geographical Society

globe

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

Helping sort the RGS records and archives, with 5 other interns. We also shadowed members of staff in different divisions to grasp the various aspects of what the RGS does, and worked in the fundraising, education, research & higher education departments. We were responsible for handling confidential membership material and for organising important archives for their journals.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I lost my fear of not fitting in, as I was nervous that I wouldn’t. Within a few hours I felt very confident and at home there, the staff made us feel very welcome and I picked up some professional vocabulary that I feel comfortable using now.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I helped them sort out some of their many paper archives to aid them transition to becoming a more digitised organisation, and helped the education department by planning school visit sessions for them.

Recruitment Resourcing Intern

pexels-photo-70292

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

I was responsible for resourcing new candidates through head hunting, cold calling, Linkedin message and email – working towards my target of 20 active candidates per week. I also identified and contacted relevant candidates from the company’s existing database. I carried out the initial screening of candidates for senior consultant, either through a phone call or email communication. I was tasked with formatting candidate CVs and job specs, with a quick ten minute turn-around time, whilst still maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. I also picked out relevant and interesting media related news articles to post to the company social media page each morning. Finally, I developed and maintained resourcing spreadsheet in Excel and researched and built organisation charts for key clients.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I gained full end to end knowledge of the market in which I was recruiting (Ad Operations and the Programmatic landscape), something of which I had no knowledge before starting my internship. After receiving my initial training, I presented my understanding of the market back to the team. Towards the end of my internship, I then did my presentation for a second time, this time explaining my deeper understanding and working to improve on my first attempt.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

In my role as a resourcer, I was responsible for contacting as many relevant candidates as possible. Over the course of my internship, I initiated conversation with around 400 different people, finding whether out whether or not they were open to new opportunities. Of this, around 130 people were interested in new opportunities – I liased between these candidates and my senior consultant, in order to gain their details and work out which roles they would be suitable for. Of my sourced candidates, 16 different people had 30 different interviews, as a result of me contacting them.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

I encountered a difficulty in that, as an intern, I didn’t have access to a ‘Linkedin Recruiter’ account which enables you to message an unlimited number of potential candidates, and is an essential resource to the rest of the team in order to reach as many people as possible. I was therefore unable to use the search function on Linkedin, and so was limited in the number of candidates I was able to find. I overcame this my alerting my senior colleague to the issue and asking for a list of names I could work through manually instead.

“Caitlin has been a valuable asset to our team. She has picked up significant knowledge of the digital advertising industry and is now interviewing for two full time positions within digital advertising due to the experience gained with us” – Line Manager.

Fundraising and Administrative Intern – Pump Aid

pumpaid

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

I am working as a Fundraising and Administrative Intern for an NGO/Charity called Pump Aid. They work in Malawi with the aim of providing clean water to as many people as possible. They have a base in Malawi, but I am in London working in a small team of about 6 or 7 daily. Because it is such a small charity, I have been very fortunate to be able to see how each aspect of the charity works. I have had meetings with each member of staff from the CEO to the graphic designer, so I feel like I have an incredibly in-depth knowledge of every angle of the organisation.

I have already been put in charge of all of the social media for the charity on a variety of different sites, as well as being responsible for the fundraising reconciliation. This involves using different databases and websites to record every donation that is received.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I wrote my dissertation on the link between gender roles and water poverty in Africa, so I am very happy to be putting my degree to use!

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

The director of programmes has already asked for information, and I have put together a report for him based on my research, so hopefully I will be more involved in that side of the organisation more and more.

Economist Intern – Ofcom

calculator-calculation-insurance-finance-53621

What were your main roles and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

During my internship I assisted with the  Wholesale Local Access Charge Control project,  and spectrum policy.  Working on this project involved collating data and other source material for analysis. I was also responsible for writing a section of the internal economist newsletter created by current graduates. Whilst on my internship I also engaged in networking events and introductory talks.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I got the opportunity to engage in two different projects and gained sound background knowledge in a section of what Ofcom does. Also, it was great to see some of the concepts that I learnt from university used in practice.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I was happy that my manager and other colleagues gave me recognition that I contributed in a positive way and helped to lighten their workload.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

At first I had problems absorbing the amount of background information on the projects and encountered many technical acronyms that I have not heard of before. This required a bit more patience – studying and figuring things out by myself – but also asking questions.

Planning and Research Intern – All We Can, Methodist Relief and Development

pexels-photo-59519

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

I had a variety of tasks to fulfil during my time as an intern at All We Can as I had various roles in the organisation. I was first tasked to review their travel policy for when staff members would go to meet partners in developing countries. This required extensive research on the transport to and from, as well as in, the respective countries. After this I worked on the organisation’s country profiling documents, assessing which countries would be viable for AWC to work in and find partners. Once again this required research on many aspects of the country such as its HDI, political environment, corruption levels and cultural backgrounds. The third task I was given was to create a flow chart describing the organisations guidance on scoping new countries for partners to work with. I helped at a supporters awareness meeting in the Midlands where I represented the organisation and assisted with answering questions from supporters and clearing down the room. I summarised and tabulated answers from the questionnaires filled in by the international partners regarding the advocacy and humanitarian work of AWC, as well as investigating what the salary scales for international NGO’s staff working in developing countries was.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I received a first-hand eye witness experience of what it means to work in an international humanitarian aid organisation dealing with work directly related to humanitarian development with partners in developing countries. From this I have been able to gain a better understanding of what working in this industry entails, and all of the behind the scenes work that goes into making projects successful. The most rewarding of all was being exposed to a totally new, cutting-edge approach to humanitarian aid that I had not come across before in my studies whereby this small organisation is able to partner with communities and work not only with them, but for them.  The people receiving the funding are at the table with the donors setting the agenda for the aid work that will take place in the community. This was incredibly enlightening and eye-opening for me.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

The work which I did for All We Can during my internship enabled them to accelerate their administration and planning programs regarding the new approach to partnerships in developing countries. This decreased and simplified the workload for several of the staff and provided support when several of the staff were away on international trips visiting partners. I also ensured the smooth running of the supporters awareness day.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

There were some occasions when I struggled to understand how to formulate certain information and I was able to ask for advice and support to complete the work effectively. I was unable to access the printer from my computer therefore I emailed the work to a colleague and they were able complete this for me.

“Joel  carried out research, providing global poverty and development statistics that fed into our country scoping strategy. He also analysed survey questionnaires on our humanitarian assistance and advocacy programmes and provided a summarised and condensed version of the results, spelling out trends and patterns. He also supported one of our volunteer training sessions.” – Head of Programme Operations.

Marketing Intern – Twisted Halo Drinks

drink

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

From the day I started I was took on responsibility within the team and was given ownership of my own projects. I set up a brand ambassador programme for the company, and began recruitment and promotion of the scheme on social media. While doing this, I also reached out and contacted many smaller scale bloggers, and ordinary people who would be engaged in sampling the drink and sharing with their friends. I was in contact with many businesses regarding collaborations for competitions, pop ups and event ideas. In addition, there were many ad-hoc duties around the office: organising couriers, creating photo and video content, serving the drink at events, managing stock logistics and researching data for use on infographics.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

My biggest achievement from the internship was learning that this is definitely the industry and company I am passionate about, and would love to go into after University. I now know I enjoy the dynamic start-up environment, working with a group of people I have similar interests with, and brand management within the health product sector. As a result of my work during the time at the company, I have been offered a part-time job, working remotely for the company while I am at University.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

As a result of my internship, I have increased brand awareness and following through social media engagement from those I have contacted, as well as creating photograph and video content for our social media channels. Also from the contacts I made, as a result we will be present at London Fashion Week and upcoming Influencer Events. Furthermore, a recent investor to the company has commented on the brand ambassador scheme, and how crucial it will be in the future growth of the business.

Environmental Education Assistant – Royal Parks Foundation

park

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

I was involved in the everyday running of an environmental education holiday club in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London/ The Lookout, part of the Royal parks foundation education programme at the Lookout, Hyde Park.
This gives city children the opportunity to explore what the outdoors has to offer.
Tasks included:
-Supporting Ecology Centre staff with delivery of school sessions and holiday activities.
-Preparing equipment and resources for use, and ensuring they are maintained and stored correctly after use.
-Assisting with the day-to-day running of the centre, including daily set up and animal care.
-Maintaining the Ecology Garden and Edible Forest Teaching Garden, e.g. through planting and weeding.
-Supporting Ecology staff with organising and delivering the events programme and smaller activities for visitors.
-Welcoming and engaging visitors to the centre.
-Supporting other Ecology projects within the park and local community.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

My biggest achievement was being confident enough to make suggestions alongside the work I was being asked to do. Because of this I feel as though I’ve been able to have a small influence and put my stamp on some of the programmes at these centres. One example, included suggesting there should be an education display in one of the class
rooms, and I then took on the task to complete that. I was very proud of the result.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I was able to be an extra help during the busy holiday period, mainly by preparing for lessons, laying out equipment and then taking an active involvement in the sessions with young people. I was also able to be a help with a huge amount of admin tasks for the Royal Parks foundation as their fundraising half marathon approaches in October. This was great to be involved in as the run raises money for the parks education programmes.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

It wasn’t a huge problem, but I did learn a lot about time management when it comes to commuting on the London tubes. There is a lot of unreliability, so making sure I was on time and ready for work was sometimes made difficult by cancelled trains.
