CHANGE: Sustainability at the University

Our goal:

Make the University sustainable and contribute to its 2020 carbon reduction target

How we want to achieve this goal?

With PAVEGEN. Pavegen is a London based company producing multifunctional custom flooring systems that generate off-grid electricity whenever people step on the tiles.

What are the benefits of Pavegen floor systems?

  • resilient flooring exceeding international safety standards
  • different types of construction allow integration into any indoor or outdoor location
  • top sheet surfaces can be tailored to any visual design specification
  • ability to illuminate the path whilst you walk
  • analysing walking patterns

Pavegen is already successfully implemented at Heathrow Airport, Harrods in London and in Simon Langton School in Canterbury. What about Exeter then?

Pavegen at the Universtiy of Exeter – a thought experiment:

Let’s assume Pavegen flooring systems were installed in front of the Forum. 5 Watts are produced per step and each student needs at least one step to enter and one to exit. If only 1000 students entered the Forum per day, it would produce 10kWh/day/tile. This is an amount needed for 172 hours on-time for a 50″ LED TV. Only 1000 students? And Exeter has even more: there are around 17.000 undergraduates on campus!!!
