Intellectual Property Rights and Licenses

The OER team met with Rachael Morgan, a university legal representative and Paul Hirst, the university Risk Manager to discuss intellectual property copyright issues that may arise during the course of the project.

From the meeting a process of due diligence was created to ensure that all content made available through the project is licensed accordingly.

Also, there was some discussion on the use of a Creative Commons license for the content and the possiblility of creating Open Exeter’s own license using OpenDOAR:

More on this in due course.

I found Rachael’s terminology of ‘licence in’ and ‘licence out’ clarified some of my thinking. We focus a lot on issues within the resources which may inhibit placing them in an OER (licence out). But this stage must be preceded by obtaining an agreement from the author to allow us to place their material there in the first place (licence in). Obvious, but an important distinction. Tom
