ET Collective #07: Publishing

A short catchup this week as a (downright fortunate) few of us have escaped to sunnier climes.

Rich has been working on moving the website into the University’s new content management system and I have been marking up course material on eighteenth-century literature. I’ve also been communicating with JISC Legal about the grey area of paraphrasing. They were very helpful, particularly in acknowledging that ‘paraphrasing’ covers a spectrum of meaning and detailing these in a way that enables me to take things forward.

The more I look into OER, the more it seems that institutions will only steer a way through IPR by creating policies which are perhaps more rigid than they would strictly need to be, in order to establish a cost-effective route though the ifs, buts and maybes of myriad legal specifics. It also repeatedly occurs to me (and this is a personal view) that OER is so strongly related to publishing, that it may do well to sit in close proximity to the publishing arm of an institution – for the potential benefit of both.
