10 Things We Wish We Had Known About English Literature

Hi! We’re Mikki and Thais, second year students on the English Literature course at the Penryn Campus.

When we began researching for this article, we came up with a few ideas but wanted to reach ten points, so we also polled some of our classmates and moved things around so the points weren’t too repetitive. This is our final list, elaborated on to clarify and give you ideas of our personal experiences.

Disclaimer: we won’t be telling you information about the course that you can read on UCAS or the course research. We think it’s important to do your own research and find out the givens of this specific course, including the reading, modularity, etc.

A Very Cold Week in My Life

Super duper late but recently, I took over our Students’ Instagram account to show everyone what it was like to study English at Exeter. As the Beast from the East snowstorm came upon Cornwall just midweek and cancelled classes and meetings, it was a pretty chilled few days for me; a contrast to my usual hectic schedule! (more…)

Living in Glasney

On the way to a morning lecture

As a first year, one of my biggest worries whilst applying for Exeter was student accommodation. How do I apply? Are there catered halls? How easy is it to walk to the nearest grocery store? Luckily, the page for Residences on the University of Exeter website as well as the Accommodation tab on the Falmouth Exeter Plus website answered all my questions. With the help of the images and descriptions provided, I made the decision of applying for Glasney Student Village.

A week in my life as a Business student in Cornwall

My week of taking over the Exeter student-run Instagram account – @ExeterUniLife.

Monday

Good ideas start with great coffee”

My first day of the week. I’m really excited to look after the Instagram account and inspired to make the most out of the next 7 days.

I spent most of my day on campus – went to the Finance lecture and seminars and stayed in the library.

Palm trees & Snow #BeastFromTheEast

On the last day of winter, Falmouth and the whole country turned into a Winter Wonderland. As I am from a country (Russia) where snow is something completely normal, I was very excited to see the reaction of people who have never seen snow before. I was one of the of the people in my house who woke up early and saw the magical snow outside my window. (more…)

Penryn Campus Stitching Society

The Stitching Society was born two years ago, built by two Exeter humanities students who crocheted, knitted, and wanted a place to do it with other people. As the society was created mid-year, it took a while for it to take off, and the few members met in the Stannary on Wednesday evenings to casually knit together.

The freshers’ taster sessions in my first year, September 2017, saw a huge turnout. Many were there to figure out what the society was about and maybe learn some skills, and the rest, like me, were there to knit with kindred minds. Attendance eventually died down enough for us to all sit down together and have quiet sessions. We made great friends and laugh to tears almost every session – it’s really more of a social society than anything else.

Truro City of Lights

I went to Truro City of Lights on the 31st January with my friend Sophie. For anyone who goes to Penryn or Truro Campus, this is quite a good idea for a weekday evening out (trains don’t run back to Falmouth after 10.30pm). We caught the train at Penryn Station at around 6pm before walking down to the main street in search of a bite to eat before the parade started.

We started our evening at the café above Waterstone’s, which is a lovely place to relax and has, if you’re lucky enough to grab one, window seats. We had their handmade sandwiches and smoothies, but they also sell desserts and hot drinks. Their special advantage is that they offer books to read while you eat.

A Guide to the annual FXU Student Elections on Cornwall campuses

So, it’s a chilly day in February and you’re walking towards the Exchange with your friends to head to your next lecture but the moment you step into the building, BAM…you’re suddenly bombarded with lots of students, several dressed up in coloured shirts with catchy slogans – there’s a lot of very smiley people coming up to you with manifestos and flyers are being waved in your face. What’s up with that?

At the moment as I’m writing this, we’re at the end of elections week for the 2018/2019 FXU Student Presidents! So, I’ve decided to do a quick post about the annual elections so that you know what’s on around campus if you do decide to study at the University of Exeter on the Cornwall campuses (or maybe you’re a prospective Falmouth student who has sneakily hopped over onto our Exeter student blogs to have a look at what’s going on…) and not get overwhelmed when elections week rolls by in your time at university.

Exploring Cornwall – The Lizard point

When you see all those beautiful pictures of nice beaches, turquoise water, massive rocks and sunny weather, you always imagine it’s somewhere far away in a tropical country, but here is an example of what you can see right next to you while studying at the University of Exeter in Cornwall. Incredible, right?! A year and a half ago, I would not believe that I would be able to see this in England. (more…)

Friendships at university

One of the things I was told multiple times before going to university is that “it’s what you make it”. Which seems kind of obvious, to be honest, and I was a bit bemused by it at first. Of course it’s what you make it, I thought. Everything is. (more…)

Dear UCAS applicants

Dear UCAS applicants,

How’s it going? I have to admit that I’ve erased most of my UCAS time from my mind. It was NOT FUN. Ultimately, it just becomes a short period of time in your memories. All you can really do is your best, submit and then drop it all out of your mind. There is a point where it’s out of your hands and that’s the point where (for most of you) this is your final year, and you need to focus on your work.

However, there is a bit of advice I’d like to give you.

Why I chose the University of Exeter in Cornwall

Cornwall – I’ve said it before that people often marvel at how far away it is for me in terms of university choice – it’s even more astounding because I’ve come from a country so far away, which means added travelling and stress. Why not somewhere more central like London where there are huge stores and big events (e.g. concerts at the O2) Or just cities in general like Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh, etc.? Why not in the actual Exeter itself? (more…)
