My Penryn Experience (so far…)

Hey there everyone! My name is Matt and I’m a second year History student lucky enough to be studying at Exeter’s Penryn Campus in Cornwall. There’s a lot to say when it comes to Penryn – and what I’ve included here is really only the surface of it.

On my first visit to campus back in year 12 (4 years ago, what!?) I got completely drenched, it was quite the first impression and cost me a brand-new set of clothes! What struck me immediately though was how I could see myself running from building to building in the Cornish downpours, unfortunately I’ve since realised it’s not as romantic as it sounds – but still a great laugh. I like to think what really sold it to me was hearing about summertime when a huge inflatable waterslide is installed randomly for a day on the hill outside Tremough House, but truthfully the place just clicked with me. So, contrary to the advice of my history teacher and sixth form leader, I put Penryn as my first choice, and can say confidently that I’ve spent the two best years of my life here. (more…)

The difference between studying History at School vs University

Hi everyone! My name is Emily and I’m a 2nd year History student at the University of Exeter. I’m based down at the Penryn campus in Cornwall which I love because it is such a different experience and atmosphere compared to Liverpool which is where I’m from.

I love the independent that university brings, and this doesn’t just mean living alone and things like that but also in my course. When it comes to how you study and quite often what you study, you get to decide what to do which is very different from school. It is exciting, but admittedly a little daunting at first!

How Exeter’s campuses compare

Exeter has a leading reputation as one of the top 10/15 Universities in the UK, but many may be surprised to know is that there is more to Exeter than its main Streatham campus. There are several other campuses, largest of which is the Penryn Campus based in Cornwall, and with an ever expanding field of subjects and growing student numbers, this campus is going to become more prominent.  Cornwall in the summer is an absolute delight, with a host of touristy spots and off the beaten track gems to be discovered. Talking about… Men’s Mental Health

Trigger warning: Suicide

We have all heard of Movember. The charity’s work is effective and unmissable thanks to the many unique additions to men’s upper lips during the month of November. The moustaches may range from the spectacular to the embarrassing but are all in the name of raising awareness for, among other things, Men’s Mental Health. However, the charity themselves would be adamant in stressing that this is not a month-long issue, but rather something that needs to be talked about and tackled every day of the year. (more…)

Recounting Term One

Moving to Cornwall from India has so far been a tremendous journey. On 14th of Sept 2019, I landed at the London Heathrow Airport looking forward to my journey to Cornwall on the airport pick up service organised by the University. With the luggage put into the storage compartment below I boarded the bus and picked out a window seat to enjoy the journey to Cornwall, a few minutes later, a girl asked if she could occupy the seat next to me and soon enough we got talking about the courses we are going to be studying, where we are from and of course about the weather. Little did I know on that day that this person would turn out to become one of my first and most comforting friends. I was lucky enough to meet another person too during the journey, outgoing and bubbly would be an understatement for her, we both were the only ones shivering in the late September wind and already disliking the weather.

BSc Business in Penryn – New York City Field Trip

One of the really cool things about studying BSc Business at the Penryn Campus is the field trips!

Our group on the first day at the Statue of Liberty

I am currently in my third year, and have just come back from an incredible field trip to NYC for my BEP3090 Research Module.  The premise of the module was to perform a mainly ethnographic study on an independently proposed research topic.

The idea was to give students the opportunity to observe business operation and internal dynamics in real life, in a national or an international context. On the trip, we were given access to international organisations and institutions through visits, guided tours, networking and informal interactions.

For my topic, I chose to observe the ways in which different organisations brand themselves to be ‘sustainable’ and whether or not these brand images held true in reality.

Read below to see a bit more of what we got up to throughout the week. (more…)

Global Chums mentoring scheme: interview with Amelia

I signed up to be a Global Chums mentor in Spring of 2017, at the same time as I signed up to be an academic mentor. I wanted to be an academic mentor because I’d had one myself, who was extremely supportive and helpful whenever I needed it. As for Global Chums, it was the first year of the scheme and the organizer sent everyone e-mails asking for prospective mentors, and it sounded like a great way to share the things I’d learned about being a foreigner on this particular campus, but also of meeting new people from all sorts of places. So I know what my experience has been like, but since I was never a Global Chums mentee, I can’t really recommend it on my own behalf. So I sat down for hot chocolate with one of my mentees, Amelia from New Zealand, to ask her about her experience and whether she’d recommend the scheme to incoming international students. (more…)

How To Travel Responsibly

For every student studying at the University of Exeter, travelling can be a blessing that can make you want to cry sometimes but you hold it in because in the end you have to travel anyway. As an international student, I tend to travel a lot and it’s become second nature to me, which is why I thought to impart some of my wise knowledge to you – even if you might already know this.

10 Reasons Why My Degree is the best thing I’ve ever done: no matter the outcome

My degree has officially been over for a few weeks now, and in between reading of anything I can get my hands on, seeing friends and returning overdue books to the library – I have been thinking about the partial list I made in my head during peak dissertation stress regarding reasons why my degree has been worth it, no matter the outcome. So this afternoon armed with a coffee, my typewriter and a huge heap of nostalgia I wrote them up and now it’s time to give them a home.
