Me, myself and my EXEperience

Standing on the Piazza, I see the same view I saw a year ago. The gently swaying of the trees blazing red and orange outside the Forum, the students and staff milling around, enjoying the day and the feeling of intense energy and joy in the air. But a year on, the person watching the view is different. The past year has brought some big changes in me –  from my postgraduate degree, to my job and my experiences at Exeter. All have had a tremendous impact on shaping me! Today, I stand here more confident, self-assured, knowledgeable (and just a tad older!) than I was last year. How did this happen, you ask? Well… (more…)

Spending an Autumn’s Day in Exeter

A blush spreads across the trees. Gremlins, ghouls and freshmen anticipate All Hallows’ Eve and pumpkin spice lattes. It is autumn in England! As a Pakistani who grew up in Multan’s desert heat, autumn was always a briefly snatched season, with the trees barely changing colour before winter arrived. In Exeter, autumn paints trees and vines red and yellow and burns them orange, in a brief little cheer before winter. Drawing on from how I spent a day recently, here’s a guide to an autumn’s day in Exeter. (more…)

Exploring England – Day out in Bath

For an  international student, the UK is full of thrilling places to visit – one of these is Bath. Featured widely in literature and a tourist hot spot, Bath is widely known for being a wonderful, historic city. As a bonus – this lovely city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is barely a two-hour train ride from Exeter St. Davids. (Or a slightly longer but cheaper coach ride.) I’ve wanted to visit Bath for ages, ever since I read Jane Austen’s novels. Seeing its charm and wandering around its cobblestone streets while seeing all the majestic sand colored architecture was a dream come true. (more…)

Global Chums mentoring scheme: interview with Amelia

I signed up to be a Global Chums mentor in Spring of 2017, at the same time as I signed up to be an academic mentor. I wanted to be an academic mentor because I’d had one myself, who was extremely supportive and helpful whenever I needed it. As for Global Chums, it was the first year of the scheme and the organizer sent everyone e-mails asking for prospective mentors, and it sounded like a great way to share the things I’d learned about being a foreigner on this particular campus, but also of meeting new people from all sorts of places. So I know what my experience has been like, but since I was never a Global Chums mentee, I can’t really recommend it on my own behalf. So I sat down for hot chocolate with one of my mentees, Amelia from New Zealand, to ask her about her experience and whether she’d recommend the scheme to incoming international students. (more…)

What is Liberal Arts?

“So what do you study?”
