SEM penryn Day 3aThe New TESCAN SEM arrives at Penryn!

Breaking news!

Tthis week sees the fruition of the hard work technicians across two campuses have been doing in order to bring two new Scanning Electron Microscopes from TESCAN to the research and teaching community of the University of Exeter.

Joe Pickles from Penryn Campus and Judith Bannerman from Streatham Campus have been working collaborative with Gavyn Rollinson, Hong Chang, campus services, professional services and academics across the two campuses, for over a year, to obtain funding, determine demand and improvements that could be obtained, tender and then install two brand new, state of the art SEM machines from TESCAN. This week the installation began on both sites simultaneously.

Once installation is complete and training is completed this week, Prof Ken Evans will officially open the SEM in the Imaging Suite on Streatham campus and Dr Gail Reeves, head of Technical Services will open the SEM at Penryn. These machines will be open to research groups, students and the campuses as a whole with the hope that it will also generate external interest and income to support the machine in the future. These TESCAN machines are highly adaptable, have multiple empty ports to add new analytical techniques, are fully automated and can even be run from your iPad at home!

SEM penryn Day 1aIt was a sad day when the old JEOL SEM  was taken apart and left in the hallway for collection. With over 22 years service  it has worked for the department tirelessly.
