In 2017 the University of Exeter and more than 35 institutions from across the UK proudly joined the Technician Commitment – a sector-wide initiative led by the Science Council and supported by the Gatsby Foundation to help address key challenges facing technical staff working in research and teaching.   Fast forward to 2018 and we were invited by the Technician Commitment to submit a summary of our progress to date and an action plan detailing how we would continue to work to support our technical staff according to four target areas: greater visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability.

Our application focusses on outlining the progress that has been made since the formation of Technical Services as a single professional home in 2015.  Highlights include: our work to improve structures, job descriptions and clear progression opportunities among grades (the success of which is demonstrated the number of staff who have progressed through one or more grades since the formation of Technical Services – currently at 16%); the annual Technical Services Conference; and our promotion and investment in learning and development opportunities.

We are now delighted to report that we have received extremely encouraging feedback from the Technician Commitment Steering Group on our progress and future plans, and that we will receive an award of submission at the inaugural Technician Commitment ceremony in November.

The Technician Commitment committee responded: “It is clear the University is very dedicated to the Technician Commitment, and in the action plan there are continued significant efforts to support and develop Exeter’s technical community. “

Although our development so far is positive, our action plan also highlights there is much to do to keep the momentum going – such as linking up with our GW4 colleagues to increase opportunities for professional development, building a dedicated Experimental Officer network and the formation of a Technician Commitment committee to drive activities forward.
