Jordanna Broom, Apprentice Mechanical/ Manufacturing in CEMPS writes “this event was for all universities and institutes either signed up or who were joining the technician commitment. This was a wonderful chance to see other universities from around the country discuss the opportunities and challenges we all face. Being a member of the technician commitment committee I felt it was a great experience to go to this event. Meeting so many other technicians from other institutes and universities, finding out what they are doing to help the recognition of technicians, how they are progressing with their action plans and what ideas I could bring back for our committee.
There was a number of talks, presentations and discussions throughout the day. Which gave an insight into how the universities and institutes are dealing with the challenges faced by technicians in research and what ways they are looking to improve these. Various programs have been set up between universities and institutes for example MI8 (Midlands 8) and London technician commitment signatories.
Halfway through the day we had a guided tour around the Jaguar factory, looking round all the production lines of how the cars are built and tested. This was an amazing opportunity to see the whole start to finish assembly of the car and how a real factory works.
