Synthetic biology…explained!

Welcome to the 4th Domain.

This blog is intended to introduce students (and maybe even some staff) at the University of Exeter to current topics in synthetic biology and biotechnology. It is hoped that it may also prove to be a useful tool to showcase some of the exciting developments in modern biology to the interested layperson, as well as making readers aware of the challenges and controversies we face.

As an introduction to the philosophy behind synthetic biology this video from James Hutson seemed the most fitting way to start. The video comes with the tag-line, “Synthetic Biology: putting the engineering back into genetic engineering”.

And, by way of an abstract,

From selective breeding to genetic modification, our understanding of biology is now merging with the principles of engineering to bring us synthetic biology.
