So far the tablet PC has not been popular. However, the tablet PC of the future will likely run it’s software ‘in the cloud’ meaning that all the complicated processing is performed on a computer sitting in a data centre rather than directly on the tablet PC. With the trend towards touch control interfaces continuing the day of the tablet, or mobile internet device could finally be here.
All it needs is for somebody to to actually build the infrastructure and devices to enable ubiquitous cloud computing. Web 2.0 and cloud services are well on the way to becoming mainstream, allowing what appears to be impossible mobile computing systems to become a reality. The mobile internet device which runs its software in the cloud simply has to connect to the internet, collect user input, process it on a remote computer and show you the result. This would make the tablet computers of the future much lighter, much faster, much cheaper, with longer lasting batteries. This (old) future concepts video shows Microsoft’s thinking on this being ahead of its time.
Rumours abound that a new tablet PC may appear in the marketplace soon. This is rumoured to be a combination of traditional and cloud computer in tablet form! Time as they say will tell.
