A group representing the CMRI, consisting of Public Engagement Manager (and CMRI PhD alumni) Dr David Newman and current PGRs Jonathon Smith and Stuart Kendall, went to the Sidmouth Science Festival (Saturday 7th October) to present a series of outreach demonstrators introducing a variety of wave phenomena and wave-matter interactions. The demonstrators then led to a series of fascinating discussions with the visiting attendees about how metamaterials utilise unique interactions to achieve brand-new functionalities beyond what can be found in nature.

The Sidmouth Science Festival was a wonderful experience to introduce metamaterials to a wide general audience. It was particularly great to see the enthusiasm of the PGRs in action as they exhibited the acoustic and optical wave behaviour demonstrators. I am looking forward to future opportunities to share the incredible potential of metamaterials and the work being done in this field by researchers at Exeter!
