On 20th-21st November, CMRI postdoctoral research fellow Dr James Capers and PGR Kyle Arnold attended the Defence and Science Technology Laboratory’s (DSTL’s) 4th ‘Operating in the Future Electromagnetic Environment (OFEME)’ Symposium 2023. This event brought together academics, DSTL researchers, suppliers and representatives from government departments such as the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to consider the future of the electromagnetic environment, both inside and outside of defence.
James and Kyle both took part in the poster session with posters on “Generalising the Yagi-Uda Antenna: Designing disordered metamaterials to manipulate antenna radiation” and “Graded Metasurfaces for Enhancing the Emission of a Distant Dipole” respectively.
Discussing their experiences, they had the following to say:
[James]: This is the third time I’ve attended DSTL’s “Operating in Future Electromagnetic Environments” symposium and it was engaging as ever. With keynote talks from a blend of industry, academia and the military the blend of people is fantastic for developing a wider appreciation of my research and for getting feedback from very different perspectives. It was also great to catch up with colleagues from other universities and to make some new connections from different backgrounds.
[Kyle]: Always a highlight of my calendar, DSTL’s “Operating in Future Electromagnetic Environments” symposium offers exciting talks, engaging workshops and an excellent opportunity to network with interested parties in the sector. It was a pleasure to present a lightning talk at the event and it sparked many compelling conversations from Post-Docs to industry partners alike.
