Why is Tenerife a great place for science?

Many places have their own unique features that make them great for studying a wide variety of biological sciences. Whether it’s a particular group of animals or special type of environment, every place has something to offer.
Tenerife is one place which is has a lot to offer! For many different reasons it is a place of great scientific importance as it enables the study and testing of a wide variety of questions in environmental and natural science. Some of these reasons are:

1) It is an Island: Islands are sometimes described as being natural laboratories as they enable the testing of many different questions in a natural environment, but is still restricted by size. It also enables the testing of theories relating to Island Biogeography (the effect of island size and isolation of populations), as well as Phylogeography (study of phylogenies events across geographic ranges).

2) Large diversity of bioclimates: Due to its volcanic nature, wide range of altitudes, and other environmental effects (such as trade-winds), Tenerife is described as having 26 Bioclimatic belts. This leads to a wide range of habitats and therefore a huge amount of biodiversity!

3) Well documented history: Tenerife has a well-documented history for its urban growth as well as for many environmental measures, meaning that it is much easier to look at how things have changed from the past. This means the effects of changes in agriculture, introduced species and increased urbanisation can be well studied.

These are just a few reasons why Tenerife and the rest of the Canary Islands make a great place for scientific study. I am certainly looking forward to learning more about the unique opportunities and experience Tenerife has to offer.
