Technical Manager – Communities for Renewables

Universtiy of Exeter Internships, UoE Internships, SCP, SBP, GBP, A2I

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

I was responsible for leading a project on smart grids for social housing including research, report writing, financial modelling and conducting meetings with industry experts. I assisted on a project for a large wind farm developer which aimed to assist them in developing a shared ownership strategy. I was responsible for seeking and assessing power purchase agreements for three solar sites. I was also responsible for writing and proof reading feasibility reports for community groups as well as assisting with drafting share offers, tendering for marketing quotes and other administrative tasks.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I think I have a much better grasp of the financial and legal aspects of the renewable energy industry.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I completed work worth £10,000 to the company and assisted colleagues with various admin tasks, allowing more experienced colleagues to concentrate on more important tasks.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

I found it difficult to concentrate in the office when co-workers were discussing business – I would want to listen and it has been valuable to do so but very distracting… I have finally brought headphones in.
