Marketing and Events Intern – The Argentina Independent

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

As a marketing and events intern I was responsible for editing and sending out the weekly newsletter to subscribers. I also updated the ‘Event’s Directory’ on the website with the latest events going on in the city. The newspaper was keen on interacting with its niche of ex-pat readers so I helped to organise the monthly photo competition and also pub quizzes and found sponsors for prizes. A large Underground Market was also organised and I was responsible for communicating with the independent food and artisan vendors as well as searching for entertainment acts. It was also my role to promote events and competitions though social media. I also helped with a special task of translating subtitles of a Guatemalan film ‘Iximulew Tierra Revuelta’ from Spanish to English.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

The internship has given me a lot of confidence to try new things and look further into a career abroad where I will be able to utilise my language skills.

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

Working with CALMARE my main focus was helping small and medium enterprises in the South West, in the form of ‘Business Assists’ which involved consultancy on materials testing, development and sustainability. This was part-funded through the European Regional Development Fund. The projects were hugely variable, from competitor analysis to product development; from the deployment of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) systems to the development of aesthetic lighting systems.

I also supported the delivery of an art exhibition “From Cowboys to Astronauts” which showcased work from 25 South West artists. It focused on recycled materials, and was designed to promote the concept of circular economy. This involved setting up and taking down at two venues, engaging with the artists, businesses and general public.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I developed my networking skills and ability to present myself professionally to businesses. I also improved my time management skills.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I delivered high quality work on time, and used a variety of skills not assessed in the original application; from the design of marketing materials to photography. I was able to add specialist knowledge (physics) to an already varied team, and was quick to learn both the procedural aspects of the job and the extra knowledge needed for the position.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

Over the last year I have come to accept challenging circumstances in my personal life, and my internship helped me focus and accept what life throws at us.

Intern – Paris International

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

The main responsibility was to respond to customers via email and telephone to hlep them to arrange the tourist services that the company offered. Once a job had been organised via email, I would then have to ensure that I booked the correct people (guides, translators, transportation etc.) for the correct date. Sometimes I would have to plan trips and events depending on what the customers requested. I also was responsible for going out and marketing the company in hotels. This meant travelling to hotels around Paris and explaining to them what the company does and how to get in contact with them.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

My French improved a great deal since I was constantly having to communicate in French. I also overcame my fear of using French on the telephone.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

Given that there were next to no employees, I was certainly a benefit to the business. There was one week in which there was only myself, the accountant and the director and often hours or half days where I was literally the soul person in the office. One month in I was given my own key because the director was away on business and the other employees did not come in until after me. For two weeks I was responsible for opening up the office and dealing with all customer business until the others arrived about an hour later.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

My main problem was arriving with a very limited knowledge of French. I took every opportunity that I could to practice speaking in French and really feel that this improved over my time there.

Festival Assistant – Harrogate International Festivals

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

In the office, I worked on ticket sales and other general admin: organising tickets and preparing for the next events. I also designed and arranged a programme book for our biggest festival. During the events themselves, my roles varied from looking after visiting authors in the green room to working on front of house where I made sure people had tickets and checked that everything was ready for the next talk.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I gained TRUE work experience – both in the office and out in the hectic environment of the events. I was viewed by my colleagues as a valuable, crucial team member. I particularly remember a time when we found out an interviewer wasn’t going to make it to an event a few minutes before, and so I suggested an alternative interviewer who I had spoken to previously, thus allowing the event to go on.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I did any jobs that came my way (and took initiative too), helping the festivals to thrive and consistently backing up my colleagues throughout.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

The main difficulties were with unhappy customers, who I often managed to calm down or assist in a professional, courteous manner. I am particularly proud of a customer who started out rudely but, by the end of the festival, recognised my good work and thanked me for returning her lost book to her.

Widening Participation Intern – University of Exeter Medical School

What were your main duties and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

I helped to develop activities for school visits, sourced materials for running activities, liaised with academics regarding such activities, supervised the school visits and co-coordinated events.

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I developed my organisational skills up to a professional standard. I also gained an insight into events management, for example in hosting a student conference for sixth form students.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

I was able to take on the tasks that often took longer, such as dealing with lengthy paperwork or meeting with academics, which lightened the workload of my colleagues.
