Residential Coordinator – Student Recruitment Office

030

What were your main roles and responsibilities during the course of your internship?

I organised, facilitated and managed student residentials across our campuses. These are overnight visits in which potential students stay on campus with staff and student ambassadors and explore life as a student. This involved liaising directly with students, planning activities, and persuading the Cornwall House swimming pool to let us have a cardboard boat challenge there!

What would you say was your biggest achievement over the course of your internship?

I’ve never described myself as computer savvy. I am a complete extrovert with a love for student engaging roles and so the thought of a desk job has always terrified me. However, this role has really made me realise the rewarding nature of office work.

What benefits did your internship bring to your employer?

It allowed other colleagues time to focus on activities such as Open Days (which I also helped out on). I was also the main link with the student ambassadors, and I was able to help keep them informed with the way the residential was shaping up.

Did you encounter any problems during the course of your internship and if so, how did you overcome them?

Plenty! We had students that wanted to have a party one evening, students who had to be taken to A+E, coaches that didn’t turn up on time, problems with catering. The biggest advice I can ever give is to adapt. When something doesn’t go according to plan work with it. You can have all the plans in the world but that doesn’t mean that it will all go that way!
