Concept

The Natural Alchemy project is an exploration into process; using the unique properties of plants, rocks, minerals and metals combined with the systems and organisms that surround them to create artwork.

Specific areas of research include the latent potential of natural materials, the innovative use of contaminated waste, the dynamic between autonomous and governed process and the fusion of ancient and modern systems.

The work seeks to develop a visual syntax beyond traditional forms of lens and print based media whilst also drawing on the research and experimentation that has gone before.

The project is a collaboration between Dr. Chris Bryan of the Exeter Sustainability Institute and artist Oliver Raymond-Barker. It  is part of the Creative Exchange Program supported by the Exeter Sustainability Institute and will continue through until June 2014.

Dr. Chris Bryan studies the world’s smallest miners. As a microbiologist, he investigates microbial populations which biomine for valuable metals. His research looks at these populations’ structures and interactions, and at how to influence their actions. Other projects have focused on e-waste biotreatment and ground water recovery.
