Steffen Scholpp, PI: I am interested in cell-cell communication. My particular interest is directed towards the Wnt signalling network. Recently my team could show that Wnt signals are transported on signalling filopodia – called cytonemes. We explore this mechanism in detail during development and tissue homeostasis. In particular, we are interested in Wnt trafficking in zebrafish gastrulation, gastric cancer and neurodegenerative disease. Profil

Daniel Routledge, PhD Student: I specialise in cellular and molecular biology, with a particular interest in cancer cell biology. My project is investigating cytonemes, specialised signalling filopodia, as a mechanism for intercellular Wnt transport between gastric cancer cells. I am exploring this mechanism on both a cellular and molecular level, to gain an insight into how particular proteins may regulate filopodia formation and thus cytoneme-mediated Wnt transport. Finally, I will assess the impacts these mechanisms have on cell growth and proliferation in both 2D and 3D (gastric spheroids) environments.
