We are delighted that Tina Schrader, Research Technician in Biosciences specialising in molecular cell biology and biochemistry, has received a “Highly Commended” Award at the national Higher Education Technicians Summit 2017 (HETS 2017). The Summit was held at the University of Warwick last month. Tina was nominated as part of the Papin Prizes, which recognise the skills, talent and experience of technicians in Higher Education, across the UK and Ireland. Nominees are elected from a broad range of universities, showcasing technical staff who have demonstrated excellence in their field, in categories such as ‘outreach’, ‘research’, ‘teaching’, and ‘lifetime achievement’.

Tina received her technical education and degree at the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg, Germany, with particular focus on cell biology, anatomy and biochemistry. She obtained international experience at the Johns Hopkins University, USA and in Portugal. Besides academia, Tina also worked in a company with focus on drug development in cancer research. In 2012, she joined the University of Exeter and is involved in several inter-disciplinary research projects to understand the dynamics and cooperation of subcellular compartments and their link to human disease.

Tina demonstrated technical excellence in molecular cell biology/biochemistry and remarkable effort which is acknowledged in three recent co-authorships (J Cell Biol 2017, 216:331 F1000 recommendation; J Cell Sci 2017, 130:1675; Cell Cycle 2017, May 2:1-7 Epub ahead of print); she independently developed new protocols for primary cell transfection/staining, and has written two chapters for Methods Mol Biol as 1st author (Methods Mol. Biol. 1595:113, 2017; Methods Mol. Biol. 1595:69, 2017). Her technical excellence and achievements have led to a nomination for the 2017 Papin Prizes (out of > 200 recommendations), which recognise the skills, talent and experience of technicians in Higher Education, across the UK and Ireland. Tina received a “Highly Commended” Award at the national Higher Education Technicians Summit 2017 (HETS 2017) at the University of Warwick, May 31st, 2017.
