This project brings together a team of research institutes from Europe to develop and deliver a new class of metamaterials, whose mechanical and optical properties can be controlled by external magnetic fields.
Metamaterials are composite structures with optical and mechanical properties properties not found in nature, producing functionality beyond that of the individual components. Metamaterials enable devices to be built that display entirely new phenomena, such as “cloaking” an object to make it invisible. The ABIOMATER project will extend the potential of metamaterials by adding in the capability to change material properties at the push of a button. Such engineered materials could be used to improve medical devices and implants, upgrading treatment options for patients.
