Thelma Awards

Our nomination as Outstanding Library of the Year 2013 in the Thelmas

It was with great pride that Exeter University Library were nominated this year in the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management’s Award (Thelma’s) for “Outstanding Library Team” of the Year 2013.

Though we were not successful we are very proud to have been in the running and three of our staff attended the event held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London on 20th June, 2013.

Inter Library Loans Price Increase in Line with British Library

From the 1st August 2013 the British Library will once again be increasing their charges for Inter Library Loans (ILLs).  We have been subsidising this service for several years and this annual increase has reached a stage where we are now unable to afford to maintain this subsidy. Alongside this other lending libraries will be raising their prices in line with the British Library meaning also increased charges for borrowing from elsewhere.

So in consequence we are now forced to raise our charge for ILLs for the first time in five years.

We have decided to have a two year staged increase in pricing in order to try and minimise the impact on our users, so from 1st August 2013 we will increase our charge to £10.50 per ILL request and £5.00 per renewal. Then in Summer 2014 the price will again rise to £12.50 to take us in line with British Library charging.  Subsequently it will rise incrementally in line with BL pricing.

We also want to draw your attention to the upcoming trial during the Summer of a new online ILL request service. This will make it possible to order and pay for your ILLs without visiting the library in person, and (in the case of articles) to have them delivered electronically to your desktop.  We hope that this will offer a much easier and higher quality service to our users, particularly distance learners and researchers.

Library and Research Skills module in ELE

Would you like to learn about effective information searching and research skills, and discover more about the different kinds of library resources available to you? Then the Library and Research Skills module in ELE is for you! In it you will find lots of information to help you find and use different kinds of resources.

You don’t have to work systematically through the module! Simply dip into it as and when you need information about a particular type of resource or want to learn more about a particular library technique or tool.

The topic areas include information skills, referencing, using the library catalogue, research databases, books, journals, theses, current awareness services and using the Internet.

A key feature of the module is the suite of video tutorials providing quick and easy to follow demonstrations of all kinds of library and research techniques and skills. For example: finding a book, an electronic book or a journal article on the library catalogue. Or learn how to activate your reading history, so that you can see all the books you’ve ever borrowed from our libraries. Not to mention the demonstrations on setting up a blog, or finding book reviews. And that’s just a few of the tutorials on offer.

There are also short films introducing you to different library services and facilities. Why not watch the introductions to the Forum Library and Lasok Law Library, or meet your Subject Librarian team on film?

There are various ways to access the Library and Research Skills module:

AWDU is on the Move

HistoryAWDU - 270212 (17)

Like human beings all libraries evolve, for us one important catalyst for such evolution has been the surge in provision Middle/Near East Studies in the UK in the past 20 years.

The Arab World Documentation Unit [AWDU], started out as an unassuming documentation unit in 1981 by the Centre for Arab Gulf Studies at the University of Exeter. The Political and Social situation in the Middle East eventually led to a greater and renewed interest in the subjects we offer.  Then there was a merger of the Department of Arabic and Middle East Studies and the Centre for Arab Gulf Studies and these made their home in the new IAIS building in 1999. A further milestone came when in 2000, the expanding and reputable AWDU collection was incorporated into the University Library management structure with the appointment of staff with expertise in Arabic and technical issues, in line with the recommendations made by Lesley Forbes.

Now, with the realisation of Forum Project, the paradigm shift and rationale of Student focus, the implications for student experience in terms of quality given the £9K fees – the AWDU more than ever must be a fully-fledged, evolving and living library that keeps apace with the changes and needs of today’s student.

AWDU is now moving to the Research Commons in the Old Library Building and this  incorporation means greater accessibility, longer opening times with staff support, greater facilities and an expanding collection in an integrated Library environment.

Meanwhile the current space vacated by AWDU will become dedicated study areas.

If you have any questions about the move then please contact the Arab and Islamic Studies Librarian – Afzal Hasan.

Library System Down Time – Monday 11th June 2012

On Monday 11th June we need to run some necessary maintenance on the Library system.

This will begin at 16:00pm and should take between 3 -4 hours however the system must be considered “at risk” for up to 24 hrs so until 16.00pm on Tuesday 12th June.

During this time there will be no access to our catalogue plus you also will be unable to look at your own record, renew items online or to place reservations.

If you wish to borrow or return items you will need to go to the library desk as neither the self issue or returns machines  will be working,  however we can manually do this for you.

To access e-journals you will need to go via the Electronic Library but if you have any questions or issues  please do ask us.

We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause and have endeavoured to schedule these works at a quieter time for our users so that we can ultimately deliver an upgraded service .

If you have any queries related to this work please get in touch.
