Experimental setup supplied by Platform Kinetics

Platform Kinetics developed and delivered a microscopic platform which was installed at the University of Exeter for detailed investigations of the fabricated devices for all research institutes within the project. The microscopic incorporated three pairs of Helmholtz coils (this produces a three-dimensional field), enabling high-speed imaging simultaneously to the application of an alternating magnetic field.

g4175However, following initial testing by the University of Exeter and University of Barcelona, this was altered to a single axis arrangement, which produced slightly higher fields and facilitated the ability to select different microscope objectives.  This was necessary, as low magnification objectives give a wide field-of-view, so enable micromotors to be found, whereas higher magnification objectives enable the details of micromotor motion to be resolved.  The whole system could be rotated, enabling alignment of the primary field axis to be set parallel or perpendicular to the Earth’s field.

Key Specification points:


–  Three Axis Uniform AC Electromagnetic Field over an area 50 x 50 mm.

– Magnetic field range up to 25 mT for a frequency range of 1 – 300 Hz.

– A simple PC User Interface should be provided to control the Frequency, Phase & Amplitude.

– A high speed camera capable at least 1000 FPS should be implemented and remotely triggered.
