Travel

Exeter is located in the southwest of England, approximately 180 miles from Central London. It is served by National Express coaches and two national rail lines, the West of England line from London Waterloo (buy tickets here) and Great Western main line from London Paddington (buy tickets here). Plan your train journey, from anywhere in Britain, via the National Rail website.

Getting here from Heathrow

By Rail:

Take the Heathrow Express to London Paddington (20 minutes), where you can pick up a direct Great Western Rail train to Exeter St. David’s (2-2.5 hours). Exeter St. David’s is a short walk (steeply uphill!) to the University of Exeter. If you have luggage, it would be advisable to take a taxi from the station.

A cheaper (though longer at approx. 50 mins) option than Heathrow Express is to travel by tube from Heathrow airport to Paddington with one change. Plan your journey here.

By Coach and Rail:

Take the RailAir shuttle bus from Heathrow to Reading (45 minutes) and pick up  a direct Great Western Rail train to Exeter St. David’s. The Reading to Exeter train journey should take 1.5-2 hours.

By Coach:

Make your way to the Central Bus Station at Heathrow. National Express provides several services per day to Exeter (Sidwell Street). The quickest service is 3 hours 15 minutes.

Getting here from Gatwick

By Rail:

Take Great Western Rail from Gatwick to Reading (1 hour 20 mins approx). Change at Reading on to another Great Western Rail train that will take you to Exeter St. David’s. The Reading to Exeter train journey should take 1.5-2 hours.
