Leah shared some insights from the scheme with us.

What were the highlights of the scheme for you?

My highlight was meeting my mentor in person, and being able to discus my career options, and gain insight a specific sector.

What did you find most useful from the mentoring experience?

It was really useful to gain personal feedback on my CV and to practice application forms.

What message would you give to a student thinking of applying for the Career Mentor Scheme?

The Career Mentor Scheme is really worthwhile, and I would urge all students to participate. It enabled me to receive personal feedback and advice for the future, gain an insight into the sector, and build a friendship with my mentor.

Paige, Charity and Development Work

During her second year Paige, Computing and Management student, was matched with the Communications and Project Manager at Oxford Brookes University.

This mentor is experienced in Advertising, Marketing and PR, Charity and Development Work, and HR. Her previous employment includes HR Emergency Coordinator at Oxfam and Internal Communications Adviser at Oxfam. Since 2010 she has been working at Oxford Brookes University.

Paige revealed more details about the ways in which the scheme helped her.

What were the highlights of the scheme for you?

I thoroughly enjoyed the work shadowing opportunity. It gave me great insight into the working day and job sector and I felt that I learned more on that day than if someone simply told me about it.

What did you find most useful from the mentoring experience?

The work shadowing and insight into my chosen profession were most useful. It was helpful to find out the pros and cons of the chosen profession and the work shadowing opened up some more job options that I hadn’t previously considered.

What message would you give to a student thinking of applying for the Career Mentor Scheme?

Throw yourself into it. By doing so you will gain the most from it.

Chun, Charity and Development Work

Chun, studying a postgraduate degree in Accounting and Finance shared with us what he gained from being matched with a mentor in the Charity & Development Work sector who found his own company, offering training, private tuition and proofreading of assignments to students from a Business degree.

Chun shared with us what he got out of the 6-month long partnership with his mentor.

 What did you find most useful?

Insight into my profession and figured out what specific moves to show a full package of me as an employee to potential employers.

What objectives did you achieve?

Increased knowledge of the general recruitment process in career aspect, and brought out a clear understanding on what characteristics a particular firm may be required.

What message would you give students thinking of applying for the Career Mentor Scheme?

 Being able to get constant advice from an alumnus is such a privileged experience. The mentor not only focused on my personal development, but also actively offered genuine guidance to enhance my skill sets for future employability.
