2 Research Fellowship Positions

The University of Naples Parthenope announces a selection procedure for 2 Research fellowship Positions on the topic: “Institutional and Economic Imbalances in the Eurozone and the European Union” for the scientific sector SECS-P/02 (Economic policy) to be funded by means of University group research funds assigned on a reward basis, scientific coordinator: Prof. Marcella D’Uva, Department of Business and Economic Studies.

The fellow will have the task to investigate the role of policies and institutions in the adjustment, stabilization and support of economic growth processes. The objective is to analyze the nature of the paths of divergence between economies and to design the best policies to face economic and institutional imbalances with particular emphasis to the European Union. The study should provide policy recommendations to enhance competition and growth.

Duration, Renewal and Amount

Each research fellowship will last 12 months. Each fellow will receive 12 months’ research funding; the gross total payment is Euros 19.367 (Nineteenthousandthreehundredsixtyseven). This amount is considered to be net of the charges to be borne by the lending administration. The amount of the research funding will be paid in monthly installments deferred with the prior authorization of the scientific coordinator.

The fellowship is not compatible with any other grant, except for those awarded by national or foreign institutions, with the objective of supporting the fellows’ research activity for a short period of study abroad. The research fellowship is also incompatible with the attendance to a Master’s degree or a PhD, in Italy or abroad, and requires a period of leave from the official occupation for the entire duration of the fellowship and involves the placement on leave without allowances for the employee working in public administrations other than: universities, institutions and public research and experimentation bodies, Italian National Agency ASI, as well as institutions whose diploma of scientific improvement has been recognized as equivalent to the title of PhD pursuant to art.

Eligibility Criteria

The selection process is open to researchers having a professional scientific curriculum suitable for carrying out research activities under this announcement, as well as holding the following requirements:

  • Ph.D in Economics and/or Statistics; candidates that have finished their PhD thesis and will complete their PhD programme (viva) within the first six months from the start date of the fellowship may also apply for the selection. The qualifications obtained abroad must be recognised as valid in the Italian territory under the art. 332 of the T.U. no. 1592/1933. It is a preferential title to have deepened the research topics described in art.1.

Preferred requirement are

  • a research track suitable to comply to the tasks and objectives described in art.1. and
  • a very good knowledge of the English language.

Other preferred requirements are:

  • experience in drafting high quality scientific articles.
  • consolidated experience in the use of statistical software (Stata, E-views, Matlab etc.)

2 Doctoral Positions in International Economics

The Chair of International Finance at the University of Mainz, Germany, invites applications for two doctoral positions.

The ideal candidates are students who are currently completing their graduate program or master and who show strong interest in current topics of international economics. The intention should be to combine model-based theory with empirical work.

Teaching duties are two academic hours per week (e.g., a class of teaching assistance per term, consisting of 14 lectures of 90 minutes). Knowledge of the German language is helpful but not required.

BACKGROUND
Over the past two decades, services have been the fastest growing segment of global trade, employment and output. The rise of the service economy has fundamentally altered the economic landscape across the world, and is likely to play a key part in shaping the global economy in the future.

As a result, services have rapidly moved up trade policy agendas worldwide. In fact, since 2006 77% of all signed preferential trade agreements included substantive services provisions, up from only 16% in the 1990s.

The unprecedented prominence of services in global trade offers challenges and opportunities that are yet to be sufficiently understood. The analytical void underlying this phenomenon risks resulting in important misalignments between the implementation of trade policy frameworks and the global agenda for inclusive growth.

Against this backdrop, the Council on Economic Policies, the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization are organizing a workshop on 25-26 April, 2018 in Geneva, Switzerland, on policy relevant aspects of the links between trade in services and inclusive growth. Papers presented in the workshop will be considered for an expedited review process for a Review of International Economics special issue to be published in 2019.

TOPICS: We particularly encourage the submission of unpublished empirical work that uses new datasets or exploits policy experiments in a novel and informative way. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
– What is the effect of services trade on inclusive growth and structural transformation? Is trade in services a promising development strategy for developing economies?
– How does services trade affect employment, income and gender inequality, quality of and access to service delivery, and innovation?
– What are key determinants of and barriers to services trade? To what extent have trade agreements reduced them?
– What policies are needed to increase services trade opportunities for inclusive growth?

PROGRAM: The workshop will start with a welcome dinner on April 24. April 25 will be devoted to paper presentations as well as a policy debate with trade negotiators and other practitioners in the evening. Presentations will continue in the morning of April 26, followed by an exploration of new directions for research in the afternoon. The workshop will take place at the WTO Secretariat.

SUBMISSIONS: Papers should be submitted by February 15, 2018 to trade@cepweb.org. Successful submissions will be notified by beginning of March 2018.

The 17th Annual GEP Postgraduate Conference 2018 University of Nottingham, United Kingdom

The 17th GEP Postgraduate Conference will take place on 19 – 20 April 2018 at the University of Nottingham. The Conference provides a forum for the dissemination of student research relating to issues of Globalisation and Economic Policy from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. These areas include Foreign Direct Investment, Trade, Productivity, Economics of the MNEs, Migration and Labour Market Adjustment. The objective of the Conference is to bring together a number of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers to discuss their own research ideas with established researchers in a relaxed atmosphere. The conference is open to graduate students and post-docs. Speakers will be selected on the basis of submitted papers or an extended abstract. (Preference will, however, be given to papers.)

Submission
Applicants must submit their CV, a letter of support from their PhD supervisor (sent separately by email; this is not required for post-docs) and the paper to be presented. If a full paper is not yet available, please include a detailed abstract, providing clearly the motivation for the work, the relationship to the literature, the method used and the expected results. Every paper accepted will be assigned a discussant who will present and comment on the paper. Therefore, those who are invited to present a paper are expected to deliver a complete paper before the Conference.

Associate Research Director – Trade, Investment and Productivity

Our research focuses on improving the measurement of production, understanding the influence of education, training & skills on economic performance, the drivers of firm behaviour and innovative capacity and the changing nature and role of external trade in developing competitiveness and also changing the patterns of employment in the UK.

We are looking to appoint an Associate Research Director with strong quantitative skills to manage our Trade, Productivity and Investment directorate. This directorate focusses on a number of themes, such as: the impact of Brexit on the economy, issues affecting trade in services and financial services, housing, taxation and debt, as well as productivity analysis.

Some of the current research questions under consideration are: Why is the UK less productive than similarly advanced nations and what can be done about it? How the gains from economic growth are distributed and why does this matter? What drives firms’ investment patterns and what is the role of institutions, firms and financial intermediation in explaining trends and cycles in productivity? These questions have gained far greater significance since the global financial crisis with the decline in productivity growth (especially in many leading OECD countries) and the stagnation of income faced by many families. Understanding these challenges are key to policy making and our future prosperity.

The position will be offered as a full –time permanent contract with a salary range of £55,000 – £85,000 FTE per annum (depending on experience), membership of the USS pension scheme as well as 30 days annual leave, starting as soon as possible. Call for Papers: 28th Conference of the International Trade and Finance Association, Beijing, China,

May 23-26 (Wednesday to Saturday), 2018. We are delighted that Beijing University of Business and Economics is hosting our 2018 conference.

CONFERENCE INFORMATION:

IT&FA is a multi-disciplinary association, and welcomes scholars and professionals from economics and finance, marketing and management, law, communications and other disciplines with an interest in globalization and the global economy. The conference will consist of regular competitive sessions, as well as plenary sessions dealing with high-profile issues.

We invite proposals on all aspects of international trade and finance, including such emerging issues as cyber security and economic warfare, digital free trade and e-commerce, intellectual property protections, and trade in various services. As in the past, IT&FA seeks papers on trade policy, exchange rates, investments and capital flows, banking, migration, tourism, communications, transportation, governance and law, and management and marketing. Industry-specific studies are welcome (such as agriculture, retail, textiles, and entertainment), as are proposals dealing with multilateral, regional, and national issues impacting international trade and finance. Theoretical, conceptual and empirical papers are also invited.

  • Program: Offers discussions of economic topics across many disciplines via speakers and panels.

Cancellations: Before April 15, 100% of the registration fee is refundable. After April 15, 50% of the fee is refundable.

The conference will open with a reception on Wednesday, May 23, hold sessions on Thursday and Friday, including a banquet on Friday evening, and conclude with final sessions or a group event on Saturday, May 26. Those planning to depart on Sunday, May 27, will have time to investigate the unique circumstances that connect China to the evolving global economy. Research Officer, Oxford Department of International Development

Productivity and Development: The Ready-made Garment Productivity Project

Grade 7: £31,604 – £38,833 p.a

The Oxford Department of International Development is seeking a fixed-term research officer with strong quantitative skills to manage data work on a large project in the ready-made garment sector. The Ready-made Garment Productivity Project has collected detailed administrative records from nearly 100 garment factories. The main objectives of the project are: understanding productivity dispersion across and within multi-product firms; understanding how management practices relate to persistent productivity differences; assessing the relationship between productivity and worker well-being.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, Professor Christopher Woodruff, the research officer will take charge of organising the data, identifying and solving issues with comparability across factories, and identifying potential areas for analysis. Experience in statistical analysis and data handling is essential. Experience managing large datasets is preferred. The post is full-time, and tenable for 1 year in the first instance, to start as soon as possible.

The postholder will manage all aspects of the data from the project; produce and facilitate analysis which illuminates key patterns in the data, developing tools as required; design and write reports, including for non-academic audiences and the rmgpp.org website; and conduct analyses for academic publications using the data. Applicants must have a Master’s degree in economics, statistics or related field; demonstrated quantitative skills including knowledge of Stata, R, or other statistical software; be flexible, self-motivated, and a team player; demonstrate experience of, and interest in development economics or management; and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
