Global Economic Governance Programme

The Department for International Development (DFID) invites tenders for its global economic governance programme. This provides support to South African partner organisations for research on a range of issues linked to global economic governance. The scope of the programme is currently being defined, and is likely to include research, dialogues and outreach on issues including:

•global trade policy to support an open international trading system;

•the conditions for regional economic growth in Africa;

•improving domestic revenue mobilisation to support development;

•ensuring global financial regulation supports development in low income countries and international action to help protect countries against financial and other shocks.

It is essential that this programme is based on a partnership with an institution or institutions best placed to supply international level expertise in this field and with excellent existing relationships with relevant stakeholders.

Releasing the transformational potential of extractives for economic development: data component and online resource hub

The Department for International Development (DFID) invites tenders for releasing the transformational potential of extractives for economic development: data component and online resource hub. This five-year programme intends to help drive economic development and eradicate poverty through effective management of natural resources.

Tenderers will deliver two projects under this programme:

•enable governments, civil society and investors to revolutionise their use of data from transparency initiatives for accountability and improved policy-making in five countries;

•support a resource hub on extractives to build capacity and coordinate knowledge and supplier skills globally so that governments can manage extractives better.

Tenderers should demonstrate the ability to: drive innovation to turn the increased volume of complex data flowing from extractives transparency initiatives and other information sources into more user-friendly formats that can be successfully piloted in five countries and possibly taken to scale; work in partnership with other practitioners, DFID country offices, citizens including marginalised groups, women and girls, investors and governments to identify the needs of data users; build capacity of users to interpret data and use it for policy design, advocacy and reform.

The Ludvig Holberg Memorial invites nominations for the Holberg prize. This recognises contributions to research in the arts and humanities, social science, law or theology, either within these fields or through interdisciplinary work.

The prize winner must have had a decisive influence on international research. Scholars holding positions at universities and other research institutions, including academies, may submit nominations.

Fellowships at the Center for International Security and Cooperation

Stanford University invites applications for its fellowships at the Center for International Security and Cooperation. These enable applicants from academia and the world of public policy, or mid-career professionals in the law, the military, government or international organisations to engage in research and writing, participate in seminars and collaborate with faculty and researchers. The following fellowships are available:

•the social sciences or humanities international security fellowship, which enables fellows to focus on a variety of security topics;

•natural sciences or engineering international security fellowship, which enables fellows with backgrounds in the natural sciences and engineering to pursue research projects on the intersection of hard science, policy-making and international security, and to hone their science communication skills;

•cybersecurity and international security fellowship, which supports research on privacy, governmental restrictions, the future of the internet, the use of information technologies by organised crime groups and individual hackers or the effectiveness of cybersecurity protections implemented by different nations;

•law and international security fellowship, which supports lawyers, law students and social scientists wishing to conduct research projects at the intersection of law and international security;

•the MacArthur Foundation nuclear security fellowship, which promotes training and policy-relevant scholarship in nuclear weapons policy in a changing global context, nuclear terrorism and transnational flows of materials and knowledge, and nuclear energyy and nonproliferation challenges;

•the Stanton nuclear security fellowship, which aids engineers, scientists and social scientists in the development of the next generation of thought leaders in nuclear security by supporting research that will advance policy-relevant understanding of nuclear-related issues;

•the William J Perry fellowship in international security, which enables fellows to conduct policy-relevant research and writing on international security and cooperation issues.

Fellowships include stipends, previously worth between US$25,000 and US$27,000 for predoctoral fellows and between US$48,000 and US$65,000 for postdoctoral fellows, over a nine to 11-month period. In addition, CISAC may provide personal medical coverage.

Rapid Evidence Assessments

DFID wishes to commission a series of Rapid Evidence Assessments (REAs) that will provide an up to date, impartial, rigorous and accessible synthesis of evidence on a set of questions under the theme of Economic Development. Bidders are invited to respond to questions on the following topics:

  • Trade for Development
  • Business Enabling Environments
  • Urbanisation and Development
  • Land Tenure Security and Responsible Business

REAs will be carried out to a short timeframe, and will include the following aspects: a structured literature search, a quality appraisal of the literature, and a synthesis of the evidence.

Fellowships in sustainability science Harvard University, US

The Center for International Development, at Harvard University, invites applications for its fellowships in sustainability science. These aim to facilitate the design, implementation and evaluation of effective interventions that promote sustainable development. The 2015 competition is focused on decarbonising energy systems in EU; designing, developing and implementing sustainable energy technologies and policies in China; and the impacts of fossil fuel subsidies on economic, environmental and health indicators and the actions that can be taken to reduce them.

Applicants must be doctoral students enrolled in a doctoral programme who have completed their required coursework, postdocs who have received their PhD degree less than five years ago and mid-career professionals from governmental, non-governmental, private organisations or academia with at least five years work experience in relevant fields. Fellowships are open to applicants of all nationalities, but candidates from Italy, China and developing nations are especially encouraged to apply.

The fellowships are available for up to one year depending on the experience of the candidate. Funding is worth US$28,000 for doctoral students and US$55,000 for postdoctoral students. Fellowships for mid-career professionals are worth up to US$35,000.

Economic and Social Research Council, GB

The Economic and Social Research Council invites proposals for its transformative research call. This aims to provide a stimulus for genuinely transformative research ideas at the frontiers of the social sciences, enabling research which challenges current thinking to be supported and developed.

Projects should involve pioneering theoretical and methodological innovation. Research must address one or more of the following priority areas:

•economic performance and sustainable growth;

•influencing behaviour and informing innovations;

•a vibrant and fair society.

Only two applications will be accepted from each research organisation eligible for research council funding. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to pitch their proposal at a Pitch to Peers workshop on 17 and 18 June 2015 and applicants must be able to attend the event in order to apply for this call.

Proposals will be funded up to £250,000 at 100 per cent full economic cost, of which the ESRC will pay 80 per cent. Projects may have a duration of up to 18 months, and up to 20 projects will be funded.

Enhancing Learning and Research for Humanitarian Assistance, GB and other funders

Enhancing Learning and Research for Humanitarian Assistance, under its humanitarian innovations fund, invites proposals for its large grant facility. Funding supports the development, implementation and testing of a humanitarian innovation that will lead to demonstrated cost-effective improvements in humanitarian practice.

Non-profit organisations such as non-governmental organisations, public or governmental institutions and academic or research institutes that have legal status and are registered in the country in which the project will be carried out, may apply. There is no geographic restriction as to the origin of an applicant. Organisations may apply individually or in consortia. For-profit organisations can be part of a consortium but cannot be the lead applicant or grant beneficiary. Lead applicants can only submit two applications per round, but can be part of any number of consortia.

Grants will be allocated to projects with an implementation period of up to 18 months and range from £75,000 up to £150,000.

Excellence Award in Global Economic Affairs 2015

Economists until the age of 35 (born 1979 or later) are invited to apply for this award by submitting up to three published or unpublished papers in the field of global economic affairs, and specifically pertaining to the following areas:

      • International Trade and FDI
      • Knowledge Creation and Growth
      • Poverty Reduction, Equity and Development
      • Environmental Policy
      • Reforming the Welfare Society
      • Labour Market Policy
      • Monetary Policy
      • Financial Markets and Macroeconomic Activity
      • Behavioural Economics

Submission of a paper does not preclude publication in the standard outlets. Submitted papers may include coauthored papers.

The aim of the Excellence Award is to build a community of the brightest young researchers in the area of global economic affairs.

Submitted papers will be evaluated by a jury. The top contestants will be granted the “Excellence Award in Global Economic Affairs” at a prize-giving ceremony at the Kiel Institute. In addition, they will receive a Research Fellowship at the Kiel Institute, entitling them to a research visit to the Institute, all expenses paid. Research Fellows will receive research support, access to the Institute’s Virtual Research Communities and the opportunity to participate in the Institute’s research projects and events.

There are four named Research Fellowships: the “Horst Siebert Fellowship”, the “Porsche Fellowship”, the “Landeshauptstadt Kiel Fellowship” and the “Birke Hospitality Fellowship”. Further information is provided on the Excellence Award website. Staff members of the Kiel Institute and of the sponsoring organizations are not eligible for the fellowship.
