2-6/04/2020        Miss Elizabeth L. Martin presents a poster on “Investigation of Coupled Elasto-Magnetic Discs for Low Reynolds Number Pumps” at MMM2020, and Professor Feodor Y. Ogrin was a session chair at the first Online MMM! They had a great experience at the conference.

 


9-10/09/2020        Mr Jacob L. Binsley presents a talk  on “Microfluidic Devices Powered by Integrated Elasto-Magnetic Pumps” at the  co-located Lab-on-a-chip and Microfluidics Europe 2020 & Point-of-Care, Biosensors & Mobile Diagnostics Europe 2020 Conferences. He presented online but the conference was a blend of online and in-person in Rotterdam.


7-11/05/2020          Mr Jacob L. Binsley has been aiding in the organisation of an outreach event Pint of Science. This is a global event that normally runs over three nights in May, in which researchers share their work with the public in the comfort of a local pub but this year it was all online and moved to September. Well done to all speakers and organisors.

19&20/02/2020           Miss Elizabeth L. Martin attended the Materials Research Exchange 2020 (MRE 2020) along side some of her XM2 colleagues. 2 eventful days in London with over 80 speakers, 1500 delegates, and 70 exhibitors attending enabled interesting conversations on how Exeter’s expertise could feed into commercial projects. She presented a poster and showed some of our swimmer demonstrations.

December 2019 Exeter’s Team along with a few other physics friends had a Christmas celebration before the holidays. Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year to Everyone!


Summer 2019          This summer, Miss Elizabeth L. Martin was awarded of the three summer student bursaries by the Center of Doctoral training in Metamaterial at the University of Exeter(XM2), covering a small stipend and project fees to allow them to host an undergraduate student for 8 weeks to complete a summer research project. She supervised the project “Investigation of Coupled Elasto-Magnetic Pumps for Wireless Fluid Movement”, that MPhys student Tom Moynihan was working on with her.

5/12/2018        It was announced that Mr Peter D. Inzani from Exeter won an award for his talk in the annual CDT PGR conference. This is an internal conference where all second and third year metamaterial PhD students present their work from the previous year. Well done Peter!

30/11/2018        During the last 2 months Dr Fanlong Meng has presented two invited talks firstly on “Unravelling the mystery of the patterns in flocks of magnetic microswimmers in a microchannel,” at Max Planck Campus Seminar, Goettingen, Germany, in October and secondly on Collective motion of the magnetic swimmers in a microfluidic channel” at the 11th National Conference on Soft Matter and Biological Physics, Chongqing, China, in November .

9-11/07/2018         We held the “BIMS workshop” at Exeter 

This thematic workshop focuses on the magnetically actuated and controlled microscopic systems enabling a range of actions at Low Reynolds number. From micro-robots and self-propelled swimmers to microfluidic and lab-on-a-chip technology, it will cover a range of topics which are of great interest in both fundamental and applied Physics. As well as world-leading experts in the field, including the confirmed invited speakers, the workshop aims at postgraduate and early careers researchers to maximise the exchange of knowledge and to provide a new platform for the development of new collaborations in this exciting scientific field.

The workshop is being held at Exeter over three days. During the three days there will be lots of exciting talks and posters. The workshop includes a dinner on the first night and a boat tour at Exmouth on the second.

We hope all attendees thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and we will them all a good journey back.
