Epilepsy – causes and triggers

Common causes of epilepsy include:

  • Abnormalities of brain development
  • Head injury
  • Stroke
  • Brain infections
  • Tumours
  • Damage to the brain caused by lack of oxygen supply
  • Genetic factors

Common triggers for seizures include:

  • Sleep deprivation
  • Alcohol withdrawal
  • Television flickers
  • Epileptogenic drugs
  • Head trauma (head injuries or inflammation e.g. meningitis)
  • Non-compliance with anti-epileptic drugs
  • Menstruation
  • Recreational drugs
  • Stress
