Aleksei Venetsianov, “Wet-Nurse With A Child” (1830)

Welcome to the Slavic Maternal Fictions website, hosted by the University Of Exeter. We are a network of academics involved in Slavic Maternal Studies, researching pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, maternal health and behaviour, and other aspects of maternity in the context of the literature and cinema of Slavic and East European nations. Our primary focus are maternal fictions – cultural constructions of mothers and maternity. We also welcome the participation of scholars working on the sociology and history of motherhood and maternal behaviour.
