Welcome reception
The welcome reception will take place on the Monday evening at Reed Hall, a majestic Italianate Mansion built in 1867 and set within beautifully landscaped gardens on the Streatham campus.
Early Evening Sea Cruises
It is from the water where the best views of the South Devon coastline are seen, this includes the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site. For Conference participants to enjoy this uniquely Devon experience, we provide a choice of two early evening cruises aboard the Pride of Exmouth:
Jurassic Coast: from Sidmouth to Exmouth on Wednesday 19 July 2017
English Riviera: from Exmouth to Torquay on Thursday 20 July 2017
All transportation that is not by sea will be covered by coach. While on shore or after the cruises, Conference participants will be able to spend the evenings in Sidmouth, Exeter, Exmouth or Torquay, all of which offer a wealth of history, interesting architecture, cafés, pubs and restaurants.
Wednesday Afternoon Excursion
A half-day excursion planned on the afternoon of Wednesday 19th July will take participants to Sidmouth (12 miles from campus) starting with a visit to the Norman Lockyer Observatory, a public amateur observatory with rich historical heritage in solar physics. This is one of planned scientific excursions. In the second part of the afternoon, a walk down the coastal path will take participants to explore Sidmouth coastal town. Participants staying ashore in Sidmouth (not on the “Jurassic Coast” cruise) will be able to spend the evening there, before returning by coach. As part of the parallel Education Program, a jointly-organised public lecture on Space Weather will take place here during the evening as well.
The Conference Dinner
The conference dinner will be held on Thursday 20 July 2017 at The Imperial Hotel in Torquay, a magnificent 19th Century Victorian hotel, which first opened its doors to guests 150 years ago. Set on a cliff top overlooking the sea, the venue is a short walk away from the Torquay marina. Participants arriving early by coach (not on the “English Riviera” cruise) will be able to enjoy the marina or the hotel amenities ahead of the dinner.
