This site is run by me, Daniel Ogden, Professor of Ancient History in the University of Exeter. I had splendid help in getting the initial bulk of material mounted from Matilda Chapman, who worked with me through our university’s internship scheme. The starting-point is the texts collected for my three books on the ancient and medieval dragon:
- Ogden, D. 2013. Drakōn: Dragon Myth and Serpent Cult in the Greek and Roman World. OUP: Oxford.
- Ogden, D. 2013. Dragons, Serpents and Slayers in the Classical and Early Christian Worlds: A Sourcebook. OUP USA: New York.
- Ogden, D. (forthcoming) The Dragon in the West. OUP: Oxford.
The texts on the Classical Dragon tab are (for the most part) supplied only in their original Greek or Latin forms and without translations (mine or others’): this is to avoid compromising OUP’s copyright in relation to the Dragons, Serpents and Slayers book.
This is a broader selection of my books, many of which deal with other aspects of traditional narratives, and of the fantastical, in the ancient world:
